It just the economy; it sucks everywhere. Don't feel too bad, mate. The current job I got took me over a year to get and didn't get it until just this new year recently. I decided to return back to college this month for a second degree in hopes it helps my chances in finding a decent career opposed to only having one degree. You just have to persistent and don't give up. Be thankful for the job you have now, but yea, you can always keep looking for something better or perhaps return to school. Maybe you Aussies have decent work at home jobs you can look into?
